PVRC
NEWSLETTER - MARCH 2002
SWEEPSTAKES AWARDS
by Pete Smith, N4ZR
I am actively crunching away on the
certificates and plaques for the intra club Sweepstakes awards. Please check below for any awards that you
think you qualified for, and notify me if you are not on the appropriate
list. I hope to get certificates out during
March, though follow‑ups will of course be possible
A.
First‑time Contributor Awards ‑‑ these are
folks who contributed an SS score to PVRC for the first time in 2001 (even if
they previously submitted SS scores for another club). The ones I have so far are:
ND3A, K1SE, W3TEF (at W3SO), N4YDU,
N4TL, W4IDX, NI4S, WJ9B, W3KHZ, N4GG, K2YWE, W4PW, W3BP, WM3T, KF4OKG, KD4D,
N3UM
Surely there must be more! Regional chairmen, if you know of people in
your chapter who deserve this certificate please let me know.
B.
Top Gun Awards ‑‑ I have the following listed for Top
Gun mugs (single ops contributing 250,000 or more points for the club). Please let me know if you should be on this
list, or if you're here but shouldn't be ;^):
K2PLF, K3DI, K3MM, K3TM, K3ZO, K4MA,
KD4D, N2NFG, N4ZR, W2CS, W2GG, W3PP, W3SY, W4NF, WR3L, W4MYA, AA4NC, W3LPL,
N4AF.
Live wire awards.
Enough of those easy ones! These
time of participation awards are for total time (one or both modes) spent on
the air in the contest (counted the way the contest counts it (i.e. 30‑minute
minimum off periods). I KNOW these
lists are incomplete, so please help me out.
In many cases, people are carried in
the 12 and 24 hour categories because I only know their operating time for one
mode. If it wasn't reported to W2GG it
probably isn't here, unless I got it separately, from you directly.
People who reported more than 47
hours were carried as 48 hour award winners.
I am missing data on AJ3M, K1GG,
K2PLF, K2UOP, K3RA, K3SV, K3TM, K3YDX, K4GMH, K4IQ, K4KDJ, K4YT, K8OQL, KE4MIL,
KG6AR, N1WR, N2NFG, N3KW, N3OC, N4EL, N4YDU, NE3H, NT4D, W3AZ, W3BP, W3EKT,
W3HVQ, W3MR, W3OU, W3SO, W3YD, W4TNX, W4YE, W8ZA, WA3RGH, WD3A, WJ9B, WR3L
(note if one of these calls also appears below, it just means they shouldn't be
here, but I missed them).
12 hours silver certificate:
AA4KD, AD4L, AI3M, K2YWE, K3AN,
K3DNE, K3GV, K3IXD, K3KO, K4QPL, K4TMC, K7SV, KM3V,KO4PY, KV3R, N2QT, N3GPU,
N3HS, N3HXQ, N4GG, N4RV, N4TL, N4YDU, NI4S, NT4D, W2CS, W3ARS, W3CB, W3PP,
W3UL.
24 hours gold certificate:
K2UOP, N3FX, N3HUV, N3HXQ, N3UM,
N4AF, N4CW, N4MM, N4ZR (the guy who came up with the idea fell 30 minutes short
of 36 hours), NX9T, W2CS, W4IDX, W4RIM, W4ZYT, WW4M, WX3B.
36 hours platinum certificate (+
lapel pin):
W3CB, W3UJ, W3SY, K2PLF, W3PP,

CENTRAL MEETING MINUTES, 2/11/02 BY
Pres Brian McGinness, N3OC
The February PVRC meeting was held
at the Vienna Library 2/11/02 at 7:30PM.
Members in attendance were: WR3L, N3OC, AA4KD, N3HXQ, W3DQ, K4VV, W3YOZ,
K4YT, K3ZO, N3RR, and KT4W. Bill, K3WA,
was attending his first PVRC meeting and is interested in membership.
N3OC gave the monthly president's
report. A report on the 2001 SS and the
rumored outcome was given, along with some of our plans for next year on
motivating folks to get on. A final
report was given on the annual holiday dinner, coordinated by K4VV. Everyone was reminded the new officers are
in
place, with the addition of two new
trustees ND3A and W3PP.
It was announced we would be adding
WAE to the list of contests that will count for the Five Million award. We will get the reference pages in the
newsletter and on the web site updated to reflect this. This starts this year, in 2002.
N3RR will be giving a presentation
on station grounding at the March meeting, in Temple Hills, MD. N3OC inquired about any presentation the
Northern Virginia group would be interested in having for the April meeting. Since WAE has been added, we will try to get
something together for the April meeting concerning WAE, QTCs and how some
logging programs handle that.
The latest from the ARRL regarding
QST contest coverage is they have accepted out proposal to work with a group of
contesters. It is my understanding a
group has been assembled and will be working with the ARRL to come up with the
best coverage we can get within their budgets.
The ARRL apparently will allow a
minor change, or variation, of the 175‑mile club circle. A club will be able to choose ONE entire
ARRL section, in lieu of the circle.
This certainly will not help PVRC, but might help clubs in large western
states where now the entire state can be in the club's area.
Remember to mark your logs
"Potomac Valley Radio Club" and nothing else because the ARRL robot
is checking that field now in order to automatically compile the club totals.
PVRC has received CQ Magazine's
plague for winner, combined club score, for the 1998 WPX. This is the first CQ plaque we have seen in
a long long time. We will research who
the lucky member is who will receive this.
WR3L gave a brief treasurer's
report. Membership action ‑
Applications were received from KT3D, WI3N, K3HDM, KB3DVC and KA8YPY. All of these are from the Laurel region and
are LARC members. A brief bio was read
on each, and all were voted into membership.
Welcome to PVRC!
There was no old business.
W3YOZ announced the 2002 Fowlfest
would be held Saturday, August 17th this year at the usual spot in Churchton,
MD south of Annapolis.
The remainder of the meeting was devoted
to war stories. Marty W3YOZ reports a
film is being made about his station in western PA, and is being shown to
potential contesters around the area.
Ed N3HXQ just returned from Japan
and was dozing during the meeting. His
next project is to get his 160m inverted L installed.
Bill N3RR has put up additional
short beverages and reports they are working very well. The lesson here is if you don't have room
for a full‑sized one, put up what you have room for and it may have
acceptable results. Bill also reports
he has some loose tower bolts he will be tightening this spring.
Eric W3DQ worked the CQ 160 contest
from his DC QTH with N3OC. They again
used N3OC's short dxpedition vertical (30') with acceptable results. They were able to work a number of
countries, and even run a few Eu with it.
Two EWEs were also put on Eric's small lot and they were able to hear
very well, including VK and ZL. Several
emails were received in thanks for getting the DC multiplier on long enough to
work the west coast and some DX.
Clair AA4KD reports he has not been
on the air too much lately.
Jack K4VV reports he has been busy
at work, and moving into his new QTH and consolidating things into one
location.
Ray KT4W reports he was at N4RV for
ARRL CW, where they did a multiop.
Fred K3ZO said he is enjoying the
VHF contests that are occurring at the top of the solar cycle. He has worked some F2 openings on 6m, and
was working many Eu on Saturday but not Sunday.
Bill K3WA is attending his first
meeting and plans on joining PVRC. He
has 95 countries on 80m and hopes to get to 100 this weekend in the contest.
Karl K4YT told of his efforts in YA
to get a license and get on the air.
YA0USA is the club callsign at the embassy. It is easy now to get a license over there but Karl reports you
will need your own typewriter to type it up yourself!
CENTRAL VA CC MEETING, 2/12/02 by
John Youell, W4TNX
At the dinner "meeting" at
the Crazy Greek, we had in attendance: KE3CCE (Nancy), W4HZ (Jon), K4JA (Paul),
Bruce (Paul's ham neighbor), W4MYA (Bob), KF4QQY (Barry), K4KML (Marie), K4KJL
(Jerry), K4WMA (Bill), N4DWK (Dave), and W4TNX (John). A few DX topics were covered and a few
station projects were discussed, as well as the upcoming contests. It seems that many are finding that work is
getting in the way of their hobby, especially with the sunspots so high! Nancy left us at the end of the meal to go
home to Goochland and Paul and Bruce headed back towards the aluminum forest in
Callao.
We were joined at the Church meeting
site by WK4Y (Roy), KE4PRL (Eddie), K7MX (Don) and W4NM (AJ). Our hosts W4DR (Bob) and N4CFL (Rosalie)
were in an adjacent part of the Church, helping out with the traditional Shrove
Tuesday pancake dinner. The program for
the evening was going to be the K5K DX'pedition video, but due to problems with
the monitor, we will postpone that 'til next month.
Club business included these
highlights:
Packet success! Thanks to all
involved. We voted to let Jon use his
discretion (up to a point) in picking a gift thanking WA4ONG for the use of his
site for our new W4ML packet node.
We voted to sponsor the Va. QSO Party Plaque for Club Competition in
Memory of Bill Cox, W4DAA. It looks
like there is some interest in regaining the plaque from the LARG. Be sure to check for rule changes on the
SPARC web site.
Contest Certificates ‑ W4MYA
(Bob) handed out copies of "recent" M/M certificates he received to
the operators that were present. Included were:
1999 M/M SSB CQ WW DX ‑ #2
Fourth Call Area
2001 M/M SSB ARRL DX ‑ #8 US
& Canada ‑ Fourth Call Area Division Leader
2001 M/M CW ARRL DX ‑ #6 US
& Canada ‑ Fourth Call Area Division Leader
Nominations of club officers will be
made at the March meeting with elections in April.
Let's hope for FB sunspots this
weekend, as I am ready to twiddle the key (or push the F‑keys) this
weekend in the ARRL CW DX contest!
NORTHWEST MEETING NOTES FOR FEBRUARY
by Ed Steeble, K3IXD, chair'
The NW region met at Paradise Grill
n Frederick, MD on 19 February 2002. In
attendance were: K3DNE, K3SKE, W6NRJ, W8ZA, W3KHZ, K2PLF, W3ZZ, W3LPL, W3EKT,
N3VOP, K3NA, K3TZV, K3WC, NE3H, K8OQL, K2UOP, N4MM, K3LP,and K3IXD.
For the business part of the
meeting:
1) We voted in K3RUQ, Tinsley, and
N3SLN, Adam (ND3F's son).
2) ARRL had an announcement on their
web page that they opened a contest soapbox page for ARRL contest discussions.
In addition to text, there were some pictures posted.
3) From ARRL N4MM reported:
a) on the ARRL contest rule changes
and mentioned that the FD rules have been changed too.
b) The implementation of the logbook
of the world probably will miss
the target date of July 2002.
4) From CQ W3ZZ reported that the DX
contest log are being computer processed.
5) W3LPL said that PVRC is looking
for a new FD site. The club would like to find a site with a steep drop off to
the west, similar to the previous
one, but it could be on a mountain ridge instead of on the water's edge. The
location should be fairly large with room for all those rocket launchers. Contact him if you know of a good site.
Around the table:
K3DNE, Ed; Since 6m is closed he is now spending more time with the family.
He lost his 1296 amp in the January contest. K2UOP brought some tubes for the
amp to the meeting. He hopes to have
2304 working for the June VHF contest.
K3SKE,Dan; He has been making
station improvements, including a new 160m inv-V at 100+ feet. Look for him the
160m contest. He is getting a 1296 backbone packet link ready for his node. If
anyone has trouble staying connected to packet, he can check the FM deviation.
W6NRJ, Jim; He did 80 through 160m
S&P in the ARRL CW contest. He asked for assistance in getting his ham
radio computer working again. K3SKE volunteered to help.
W8ZA, Bob; He hosted a multi‑2
in ARRL CW. K8OQL and WD3A were guest ops.
W3KHZ, Art; He decided he wasn't hearing as well as he should be so he
is doing antenna coax maintenance.
K2PLF, Marty; He was at N4RV, along
with KT4W, for a multi‑2 effort.
W3ZZ, Gene; He replaced the stock
filters in his FT‑847 with Inrad filters and is very impressed! He gave
the radio a work out in the CW contest and did some A‑B comparisons.
K3NA, Eric; He was on 20m at W3LPL's
in the ARRL CW contest.
W3LPL, Frank; He hosted a multi‑multi
effort in the ARRL CW contest. Conditions were suburb, second year in a row for
excellent conditions in this contest.
Frank said the 3 land buro has (finally) figured out all those SSB cards
for W3RPR are busted W3LPL QSOs.
W3EKT, Ed; His wife is recovering
nicely from heart surgery. On 6m he has 40 new countries with his total now
about 103 worked/ about 75 confirmed.
N3VOP, Mike; Since 6m is closed, he
has moved back to working the satellites. He invites everyone to check into the
53.09, 6m, FM net, Wednesday nights at 8:30pm ET.
K3LP, David; Lately he hasn't been
active in contests except for the DX expedition to J6, but does like seeing the
member's scores in QST and CQ and the high PVRC club rankings. He urges every entrant to submit their
score. He promises to enter more
contests.
NE3H, Joe; He reported excellent
conditions in the RTTY contest. He ran low power.
K3WC, Dusty; He requested the
following quote be in the minutes, "Sid, I would like to get on 6m even if
it is dead." His tower is still on the ground, it is now been that way for
over 2 years.
K8OQL, Jerry; He was at W8ZA for
ARRL CW and will be there for ARRL SSB. He will do the CQ SSB 160m contest form
home.
K2UOP, Tom; He operated in the
January VHF contest. In the ARRL 160m contest he worked 26 countries with his
inverted L. A broken tooth during the ARRL CW DX contest greatly reduced his
operating time.
N4MM, John; He put in a short stint
in the VHF contest, in the ARRL 160m contest, and in the ARRL CW DX contest. He is still selling radios and tubes that he
acquired from an estate.
We gave John a round of applause for
his 21 years of service to the League. (For those who missed the ARRL bulletin,
John is now a Past Vice President.)
K3IXD, Ed; He was at W3SO for the
VHF contest and passed around pictures taken during the contest. He reported
Marty, W3YOZ, the owner of the W3SO site, FN00, is building an impressive LM
station.
After going around the table, we had
a discussion about how to increase your score in the upcoming ARRL DX SSB
contest. Some tips were:
1) If you only have limited time,
operate from sunrise to noon.
2) Look for a clear spot high in the
band and call CQ.
3) Make your CQs short and sound
professional.
4) A tribander and 100w can be
competitive. Look at the WRTC results.
After the meeting there was a
discussion about the ARRL 160m band plan. The advise for those In the 160m
contest was to stay above 1843 mHz. The
frequency police were there during the CQ WW SSB contest and are expected back
for this contest. Hopefully the DX will listen up.
The March 19th meeting will be at
the Paradise Grill, 1275 W. Patrick Street, Frederick, MD. It is in
Shoppers World Mall, (301) 682‑6066.
The NW Region meetings are on the
third Tuesday of the month. Most arrive about 6PM for dinner and informal
discussions, the meeting begins at 7:15 PM.
MM0LEO, SCOTLAND ‑ QRV: 25
February ‑ 28 March, 2002.
Leo, W3LEO, will once again be
active from Portpatrick in southwest Scotland from about 25 February ‑ 28
March 2002. His callsign is MM0LEO and he plans to be in the ARRL Inrernational
DX SSB Contest. He will use an Icom 706 (100 watts]), an R‑5 vertical
[10, 12, 15, 17, 20 meters], and a 40‑meter dipole [in inverted‑V
configuration]. QSL via W3LEO.
